American Heart Association Keeps the Beat A Capella Style with CPR PSA

CPR Saves Lives

Each year, over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately getting CPR from someone nearby. As a bystander, don't be afraid. Your actions can only help.

Hands-Only CPR has just two easy steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 9-1-1 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the classic disco song "Stayin' Alive." CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim's chance of survival. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), people are more likely to remember the correct pace of CPR chest compressions when trained to the beat of the disco classic "Stayin' Alive" or other familiar songs with 100 to 120 beats per minute (bpm).

To help people remember how to do Hands-Only CPR, the AHA created a PSA of a family dinner-turned-disco party to Street Corner Symphony's a cappella version of "Stayin' Alive."

The AHA, in conjunction with the Anthem Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Anthem, Inc., created this awareness-building PSA to encourage people to visit heart.org/handsonlycpr and to watch the Hands-Only CPR instructional video to learn the easy steps to save a life with Hands-Only CPR.
