California Department of Food and Agriculture - Don't Let Pests Hitch a Ride Into California

Release Date: 29 Jun 2026
bnx1040bh

The number of packages Americans receive annually has grown 78% in just seven years — and with that surge in shipping comes a growing risk: invasive pests hitchhiking into California hidden in homegrown produce and plants.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is alerting residents that invasive fruit flies and other destructive pests can hitchhike in fruits, vegetables, plants and other agricultural products shipped into California from other states and countries. These pests can threaten California agriculture and damage fruits and vegetables grown in backyard gardens.

To help protect California, residents are urged to not ship homegrown produce or plants into the state; avoid buying homegrown produce from unverified online sources; and purchase only from local, licensed retailers and nurseries.

By airing this PSA, you can help raise awareness and support simple actions that protect California's communities, gardens and agricultural economy.
