California Department of Food and Agriculture - Help Keep California Free of Invasive Pests PSA

Release Date: 01 Jul 2025   |   California
Help Keep California Free of Invasive Pests (TV) – 30 Secs

California has seen an increase in invasive fruit fly infestations, causing significant damage across the state. The likely source? Unauthorized movement of infested agricultural products.

Invasive pests and plant diseases that make their way into California can have devastating consequences – not only for agricultural operations throughout the state, but also for our community’s ability to grow fruits and vegetables at home. These pests can infest and ruin over 250 types of produce when they lay their eggs under the skin of the produce. As the maggots feed, they cause fruit or vegetables to rot, making it inedible.

To help stop the spread of invasive pests, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is asking residents:

  • Please do not bring produce or plants into California from other states or countries. If you bring it, declare it. Please declare all produce and plants when entering California.
  • Do not ship homegrown plants or produce into or out of California.
  • Buy fresh produce and plants only from local, licensed retailers and nurseries.

The CDFA is asking for your help to spread public awareness of this pervasive and ongoing threat. By airing this PSA, you can help protect our state’s delicate ecosystem of natural and working land from the devastating effects of invasive species.
