How the American Heart Association Is Raising Awareness About Heart Health During and After Pregnancy in This Public Service Announcement

Release Date: 22 Apr 2026
American Heart Association - Merck for Mothers - TV PSA - 15 Sec

Pregnancy places extraordinary demands on a woman’s body — especially the heart. In fact, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of maternal death in the United States, making heart disease the No. 1 killer of new moms. The physical and hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can put added stress on the heart and blood vessels, sometimes revealing underlying heart issues or increasing the risk for heart disease and stroke.

The risk doesn’t end when the baby is born. Cardiovascular complications can occur not only during pregnancy but up to a full year after delivery.

Through their Go Red for Women® movement, the American Heart Association is working to raise awareness about maternal heart health and empower women to better understand their risk. By encouraging women to talk with their health care teams about heart health before, during and after pregnancy, the initiative aims to help protect the well-being of both moms and babies.

By airing this PSA, you’ll help raise awareness about the impact pregnancy can have on a woman’s heart, encourage conversations with care teams, and support healthier outcomes for mothers and families in your community.
